Join Befriend and Help Alleviate Loneliness in London

Our city, London, isn't just a place with sky-kissing structures, quaint cafés, rich history, and a kaleidoscope of cultures. It is also, sadly, a city where loneliness is scaling new heights. According to a study by the Belonging Forum cited in a recent article by The Standard, outstanding 35% of Londoners frequently or occasionally feel isolated, which is significantly higher than the national average of 28%.

Join us at BeFriend, and extend a hand of camaraderie to help those isolated souls. As a newly appointed volunteer at BeFriend, you will have an essential role in eradicating isolation and encouraging inclusion.

A Closer Look at The Loneliness Epidemic

The research conducted by the Belonging Forum was a mammoth task, collecting information from over 10,000 respondents, including 1300 Londoners. This comprehensive study is the largest of its kind ever conducted in the UK. Its findings provided detailed insights into the regions with the highest loneliness rates across London, with Vauxhall and Camberwell Green topping the list with 41% of their residents feeling lonely regularly.

The challenge here is considerable, and this is where you, BeFriend volunteers, can step in. By spending a few hours every week with adults who feel lonely, especially those in areas with massive loneliness rates like Vauxhall and Camberwell Green, you can potentially transform lives.

Understanding the Paradox of Loneliness

Interestingly, the study furnished an intriguing insight: even though Londoners socialize more frequently and maintain more connections than those in other regions, their feelings of loneliness persist. The BeFriend program aims to bridge this gap by offering the comfort of intimate and real connections.

We believe everyone deserves the joy of companionship and the warmth of someone who cares. Over time, as a BeFriend volunteer, you will develop the unique ability to engage in authentic conversations that end the deafening silence and nurture a profound sense of belonging.

BeFriend's Unique Approach to Combating Loneliness

At BeFriend, we empathize with the loneliness epidemic prevalent among Londoners and actively work towards alleviating it. We offer:
